Take care of your Isuzu Truck
Whether you own a single Isuzu Truck or a Fleet of Isuzu Trucks, keeping your truck in tip top condition takes a little daily care. As with any mechanical device, small problems picked up during frequent checks can prevent major inconveniences on the road.
So how do you obtain maximum life from your truck? By having the operator perform daily checks on the truck, you can eliminate and/or detect problems before they become BIG problems, especially for an operator on the road.
Daily Checks should include:
- Engine oil
- Brake fluid (for hydraulic brake systems)
- Coolant level
- Windscreen washer fluid
Regular checks should also include:
- Fuel filters
- Air filters
- Air Brake filter/dryers
Every operator should ensure that the diesel engine is receiving the three basics things needed for long life and maximum efficiency:
- Clean Oil!
- Clean Air!
- Clean Fuel!
Tyres – Check tyres regularly for inflation pressure, cut tread and sidewalls and other visible signs of accidental damage.
Commercial tyres are optimized for specific categories of operation, and selecting the right kind of tyre application is a primary consideration. This requires a good working knowledge of the fleet’s activities and its drivers’ routes. On- versus off-road, inner city versus primarily highway driving — the choices often seem obvious. However, the obvious choice can also be deceptive.
Under inflation is the number one cause of poor tyre performance and reduced tyre life. Because tyre load capacity varies directly with tyre inflation pressure, under inflated tyres can become “under capacity” tyres, resulting in dangerous case and sidewall damage, and the potential of experiencing a blow-out.
Over inflation can be just as damaging, resulting in premature tyre wear, and increased stress on suspension components, not to mention a harsh and rougher ride quality
Rotate and Balance Tyres.
While performing routine maintenance on your truck like a simple oil change, this presents a great opportunity to rotate your tyres. Rotating the tyres will ensure an even wear and tear. Tyres wear unevenly according to the drivetrain of the truck. Making sure you rotate your tyres on every routine maintenance will ensure that your tyres will wear out evenly and prevent unnecessary stress.
When rotating tyres, make sure that they get balanced as well. This will ensure that the tyre’s weight is equally distributed around the axle.
A tyre’s wear tendencies are determined, in part, by its position on the vehicle. Front or steer tyres have a tendency to wear on the shoulders, for example, while drive tyres are more prone to wear in the centre.
Typically, rear tyres will wear more quickly than the fronts because of their tendency to get scrubbed.
While the benefits of proper rotation are obvious, a fleet must consider how to rotate its tyres and determine the optimum rotation times required to keep the tire healthy without adding unnecessary cost.
So, make your routine maintenance an opportunity to prevent future breakdowns, double check if you have any leaks, rotate and balance tyres and have peace of mind that your truck is ready to set off to its next destination.
